WORKING CATS

Here at the Dubuque Regional Humane Society (DRHS) we recognize that traditional family homes aren’t for every cat, which is why we have the Dr. Peter & Ginger Sakas Working Cat Program. Working cats are healthy, independent cats from local shelters available to community members looking for natural pest deterrents. Whether you run a business or maintain a barn, we can help you find the perfect working cat for your workspace. Working cats are placed up for adoption as they become available. The Dubuque Regional Humane Society (DRHS) is pleased to announce that the current working cat program will now be called the Dr. Peter and Ginger Sakas Working Cat Program through a transformational gift to help sustain the program.  “Executive Director, Noelle Chesney, has been instrumental in restoring our confidence in the DRHS,” states Ginger Sakas. “The working cat program is a significant piece of the organization’s no-kill status, and as dedicated animal welfare advocates, Pete and I are happy to support such an impactful community service.”

Since the start of the program in 2018, nearly 500 cats have been hired to work in barns, sheds, businesses, and farms.

  • Frequently adopted in pairs to keep each other company.

  • Ideal for barns, warehouses, churches, factories, dairy farms, etc.

  • Provides previously homeless animals with a safe place to live.

  • Helps reduce the number of cats killed in shelters.
     

Requirements

  • Adopters must provide food, water, shelter, and any necessary veterinary care.

  • Adopters will need to allow two to four weeks for the cats to acclimate to the new space.
