Since 1901, the Dubuque
Humane Society has reached out to
the community, appealing to its
sense of compassion and serving as
an outspoken advocate for the
humane treatment of animals.
What began 109 years ago as a group of concerned volunteers and philanthropic citizens in downtown Dubuque, has evolved today into a multi-service organization administering to the tri-state area.
Although many years have passed and times have changed, the mission of this organization remains the driving force behind its efforts, to promote the human-animal bond and the humane treatment of all animals.
Over the past decade the Dubuque Humane Society has grown phenomenally – from caring for 1,500 animals in 1991 to over 5,500 in 2009. Our adoptions have grown too – from 400 in 1991 to over 2,200 in 2009. Our volunteer base has grown from nothing to over 500 volunteers contributing over 13,000 hours each year.
We have outgrown our current
facility – not only the animal part but
the people perspective as well as the
parking.
We moved to this facility in 1992
from our old shelter on Center
Grove Drive. The new shelter was
over two and a half times larger.
We remodeled in 1996, added on
an additional 25 kennels, a training
center and a garage in 1999,
reconfigured the cat rooms in 2001,
added offices in 2002, reconfigured
the front in 2004, and added an
offsite adoption center in 2007.
We are currently landlocked where we are and have no room for expansion.
After months of searching and investigating, we have negotiated an option to purchase 13 acres from the Grand View United Methodist Church. The land is located behind the Star Theater near Asbury Plaza. In December of 2009, thanks to the generous support of our shelter friends, we were able to acquire the funds needed to purchase the land for the Animal Resource Center.
This amount of land will allow us space to have a shelter of adequate size, a larger parking lot, trails for volunteers to walk the dogs on, and a small barn for storage and to house our miscellaneous farm animals.
The Dubuque Humane Society is not a
part of the city or the county.
We are a
private non-profit 501(c)3 organization.
We take every animal that walks through
our doors and care for all of them.
All donations are completely tax
deductible, and will be accepted through
mid-December 2009 for this initial phase
of our new shelter project.
