PET CARE TIPS

Chewing

Puppies are especially prone to chewing for two reasons:

They start teething at about three months and it lasts until about twelve months, when their permanent teeth come in.
Puppies have a lot of energy to release, and chewing relieves boredom.

To prevent chewing, make sure the pet gets plenty of exercise and regularly provide them with chewing aids like rawhide products and Dentley's or Mylabone chew toys.

If you catch your dog chewing, the first thing you should do is to give the dog a verbal scolding immediately after the fact. The scolding should be simple, such as "no, no, no, bad dog." If you don't do it immediately, don't do it at all. The dog cannot associate a scolding he's getting now with a behavior he did half an hour ago.

Another option is to coat the items that are being chewed with a "bitter apple" or some other pet deterrent.
